    Hiking

Although a campsite is located here, it is worth visiting this area. You get out of the car and hear the birds chirping in a way you have never heard before. This area was a forestry attempt to settle other tree species. A tour is really worth it, you learn a lot about the native birds and maybe you will also discover an I'iwi.

'Haleakala's summit area and its barren moon-like landscape is a real treat for the senses. But if after exploring that region you find yourself longing for the company of green trees and vegetation, a hike among the Hosmer Grove Loop Trail's cedar, spruce, pine, eucalyptus, and more will surely be a pleasant adventure'

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the primary hiking trail at Hosmer Grove and how difficult is it?

The main trail at Hosmer Grove is the Hosmer Grove Nature Trail. It's a self-guided loop that winds through the experimental forest. Hikers generally find it to be an easy and leisurely walk, making it suitable for beginners and those looking for a gentle stroll. The trail is approximately 0.6 miles (1 km) long.

Are there any specific viewpoints or natural features to look out for on the Hosmer Grove trail?

While Hosmer Grove doesn't feature dramatic panoramic viewpoints like the summit of Haleakalā, its unique natural feature is the experimental forest itself. You'll encounter a diverse collection of non-native trees like pine, spruce, cedar, and eucalyptus, planted over a century ago. The trail also offers excellent opportunities for birdwatching, as it's a critical habitat for several endemic Hawaiian honeycreepers.

Is Hosmer Grove suitable for families with young children?

Yes, Hosmer Grove is considered very family-friendly. The Hosmer Grove Nature Trail is an easy, short loop, perfect for children. The opportunity to spot unique birds and explore a distinct forest environment makes it an engaging experience for all ages. There are also picnic tables available at the campground for a family outing.

Can I bring my dog to Hosmer Grove?

No, pets are generally not allowed on trails or in undeveloped areas within Haleakalā National Park, which includes Hosmer Grove. This policy helps protect the park's fragile ecosystem and native wildlife. Service animals are permitted.

What are the parking arrangements at Hosmer Grove?

Hosmer Grove has a dedicated parking area located right at the trailhead and campground. It's easily accessible as the first left turn after the park's entrance station on the way to the summit. While parking is available, it can fill up quickly, especially during peak season or early mornings when visitors are heading to the summit for sunrise or enjoying a post-sunrise walk.

Do I need a permit or reservation to visit Hosmer Grove?

To enter Haleakalā National Park, you will need to pay an entrance fee. However, a separate permit or reservation is not required specifically for visiting Hosmer Grove or hiking its nature trail during regular daytime hours. If you plan to camp at the Hosmer Grove Campground, standard camping fees and registration apply.

What is the best time of day to visit Hosmer Grove for birdwatching?

For the best chance of spotting and hearing the endemic Hawaiian honeycreepers, such as the 'I'iwi and 'Apapane, the early morning is highly recommended. This is when the forest is most active with birdlife, and the sounds of their chirping are most prominent. Many visitors enjoy a peaceful walk here after watching the sunrise at Haleakalā's summit.

What kind of weather should I expect at Hosmer Grove and what should I wear?

Located at approximately 6,800 to 7,000 feet (2,070-2,130 meters) elevation, Hosmer Grove can experience cool and misty weather, even on otherwise sunny days. Temperatures are significantly cooler than at sea level. It's advisable to dress in layers, including a warm jacket or fleece, and consider rain gear, as conditions can change rapidly. Sturdy walking shoes are also recommended.

Are there any cafes, restaurants, or accommodation options directly near Hosmer Grove?

There are no cafes or restaurants directly at Hosmer Grove. The nearest services are typically found in the towns outside Haleakalā National Park, such as Kula or Makawao. However, Hosmer Grove does offer the Hosmer Grove Campground, which is the only drive-in campground in the summit area of Haleakalā National Park, providing amenities like picnic tables, BBQ grills, and potable water for overnight stays.

What makes Hosmer Grove unique compared to other areas of Haleakalā National Park?

Hosmer Grove stands out due to its unique history as an experimental forest, showcasing a diverse collection of non-native trees planted in the early 20th century. This creates a lush, green environment that contrasts sharply with the often barren, moon-like landscape of Haleakalā's higher elevations. It's also a renowned haven for endemic Hawaiian honeycreepers, offering unparalleled birdwatching opportunities not found in other parts of the park.
