According to tradition, the church was created in the 15th century from the synagogue of the Jewish community of Portobuffolé. However, the news seems baseless since, due to the restrictions to which they were subjected, the Israelites could not afford an independent place of worship, but were forced to celebrate the rites in the rooms of their homes.
Instead, it seems probable that the current cathedral, as demonstrated by the dedication, is to be identified with a chapel of San Prosdocimo di Rivapiana, attested since 1297. It is known, in fact, that in the past Portobuffolé referred to two curacies: San Prosdocimo, precisely , which depended on the parish church of Mansuè, and the older one of Santa Maria, in Settimo, subjected to the parish church of San Cassiano di Livenza.
