The centre of Câmara de Lobos invites you to take a stroll in the unique atmosphere of the city. The city centre is rich in traditions, stories and, of course, historical heritage. One of the most outstanding elements is the Church of São Sebastião, which is already six centuries old.
In 1426, by order of Henry the Navigator, what was then known as the Chapel of São Sebastião was built in honour of Saint Sebastian. Later, in the 17th and 18th centuries, the growth of the local population led to work being carried out on this temple. The chapel had to be remodeled and enlarged, and thus the current Church of São Sebastião was born.
This religious monument is in the Baroque style. It consists of three naves and a main altar with gilded carvings. In the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament there is an 18th century tile panel depicting the Agnus Dei.
Outside, you can see the family coat of arms made of pebbles of João Gonçalves Zarco, the sailor who discovered the island and lived here between 1420 and 1424. On January 20, the festival in honour of São Sebastião is celebrated here.
