The Nossa Senhora de Vagos sanctuary is a popular pilgrimage center, dating back to the 16th century and has undergone several renovations. The origin of the cult and the sanctuary is associated with the founding of Portuguese nationality. The legend of the image and the hermitage goes back to a sunken Gallic ship, from which a sculpture of Saint Mary was saved and hidden in a tree tuft. Later, a hunchbacked farmer, miraculously cured, built the original hermitage.
