Shahrisabz, called Kesh in ancient times, was probably founded in the 3rd century BC. Timur, the future ruler of Transoxania, was born here in 1336. He planned to make Kesh the capital of his empire instead of Samarkand and had buildings built, some of which were monumental in size.[1] The city has been an important place of pilgrimage since 1373. From 1500 the period began under the Uzbeks (named after Uzbek (1312–1340))
