The Dana Biosphere Reserve, the largest nature reserve in Jordan, was established in 1993 with an area of 308 sq km. It stretches across a rugged landscape along the Great Rift Valley and includes a series of mountain ridges, plateaus and desert plains between 1,300 and 400 m altitude. The reserve is home to the greatest biodiversity in the country; it is considered a refuge for endangered bird species, the Afghan fox and the Nubian ibex.

Several globally threatened species find refuge in the area, including the cedar girl songbird (Serinus syriacus), the lesser kestrel (Falco naumanni), the Afghan fox (Vulpes cana) and the Nubian ibex (Capra nubiana).
