History is made visible at the desert station of the Hejaz Railway near Wadi Rum. In 1916, the world was at war and much of the Arabic-speaking world was controlled by the Ottoman Empire. With support from the Allies, Britain, France and Russia, the Arabs waged a guerrilla war against the Turks by disrupting train traffic on the Hejaz Railway. The famous T.E. Lawrence “of Arabia” plays a role.
