The neoclassical building was built in 1848 on the Amtsberg, the original site of a medieval castle and palace complex, and was used as the Wittenburg district court until 1945, later as a Soviet command post, and then as a school until 2007. Under the direction of the architect Carsten Falkenberg and the curator Angela Jannelli, the interior was renovated from 2005 to 2008.
