Historians have long puzzled as to where Retburg, mentioned in documents, was once located. The castle, which was probably built in the 11th century, served the diocese of Hildesheim as a marker and fortification on the border to the Guelph area.
In the seventies, the Grasdorfer hobby historian Helmut Flohr investigated a suspicion that was ultimately confirmed: Flohr noticed a slight rise in the ground in the Grasdorfer Masch, which did not fit into the surrounding soil profile. So he dug - and in 1975 actually discovered remains of foundations, pottery shards and animal bones.
