The old town could certainly use a fresh coat of paint in some areas, which is perhaps why it feels so authentic. Despite many shops catering exclusively to tourists, you'll find a lot of unnecessary items, but you'll also find some really nice and useful things here.
And if you don't come here to shop, you'll find numerous ice cream parlors, bakeries/pastry shops, etc., which give you good reasons to head back up into the mountains for your next hike to burn off the calories.
You can even leave no money at all and just take in the beautiful buildings.
