Lime kilns were heated to a temperature of 900–1000 °C, usually using wood or hard coal (also peat) obtained from nearby forests. The insert was loaded from the top using simple wooden structures.
The furnace worked continuously. The hole in the upper part of the shaft was filled with alternating layers of limestone and fuel. The charge sliding down the furnace shaft was heated by exhaust gases from the firing zone, then the coal was ignited; while in the firing zone, where the temperature reached 1200 °C, the limestone decomposed according to the reaction
The lime kiln shaft had a narrowing brick chimney built into its upper part in order to obtain greater draft and faster firing process. Because this process requires maintaining a high temperature, the furnace shaft was insulated from the outside with a layer of earth. The walls of the lime kiln were additionally reinforced with thick metal rods. The fired raw material flowed down the shaft in a countercurrent to the pipe
