Since 1883, the place has been named after Giuseppe Garibaldi. Previously, it was colloquially called "Villa della Lupa" due to the presence of a cage with wolf specimens near the main entrance. The wolf (called Lupiae by the Romans) is the symbol of the city of Lecce.
