When serfdom was abolished in 1772, the Neuhof and Steinhof farms were divided into plots that were given to the now free farmers on a leasehold basis. The previous school, now the “Privileged Pharmacy” building, became too small for these two newly founded communities and the town of Reinfeld. So in 1839 a new, unadorned building was built on the desolate Schlossplatz, today's “Old School”. In 1839, 238 schoolchildren moved in here and were taught by just 3 teachers. It was not until 1956 that a new school building was built on the market, and the “Old School” remained in operation as a primary school until 1972. Today the building is used as a kindergarten and a youth and cultural center.

From 1604 to 1775, a four-wing Renaissance castle of the Dukes of Holstein-Plön stood here on the “Schoßplatz”. However, this was significantly larger than the “Old School” that stands here today and took up about the entire schoolyard. At that time, the house moat surrounded the castle building in a ring. Around 1775 it was sold for demolition. The demolition material was used to build the royal Danish office building (1775), later the forestry office, and is also said to have been sold on a larger scale to Lübeck for reuse. It is reported that the first stone bridge in Lübeck, the Puppenbrücke (1770-1772), was built with it.
