The oldest part of the building was built in 1818 as an apartment for the Jonas Kirsebom Petersen family. This family came to Skudeneshavn at the beginning of the 18th century with the surname Pieters. It can be assumed that the family actually came from Schleswig-Holstein. The house was expanded in 1843. A general store was opened in the extension and the large side wing housed the brewery, parking garage, grain floor and packing floor. In 1899 the side wing was given two full floors and, among other things, rooms were set up in the southern end of the house for the Skudeneshavn customs office. The general store was the location of Skudeneshavn's first post office from 1848 to 1905. The building was inhabited until 1961, when the last owner died. The house was then taken over by the municipality of Skudeneshavn for the port authority. The house was later inhabited again and a kindergarten was also housed here. In 1974 the newly founded museum received two small rooms.

Over time, the museum grew larger and today has around 1,700 square meters in several buildings.

If you want to learn more about the rich history of the place, you should visit the museum. Here you will get an insight into how herring fishing formed the basis for the town's growth and how a normal family lived here 150 years ago.
