In the 1860s and 1870s, Jean Joseph Walckiers de Gammerage (Galmaarden), a Brussels banker, bought all the land west and south of the hamlet of Drie Fonteinen. In 1778 Walckiers created an English garden of ten hectares. The English garden of Walckiers belongs to the first generation of English parks on the European continent.[4] The most spectacular part of Walckiers' English garden was a two-deck gallery bridge over the northern reaches of Walckiers' pond. The bridge still exists today (known as the 'blood caves') and is constructed as a cyclopean masonry of rough sandstone nodules.
