Prepare for a challenging jogging experience on the Hell Canyon Trail, a difficult 5.2 miles (8.4 km) loop that takes you through varied and rugged terrain. You will gain 673 feet (205 metres) of elevation, typically completed in about 1 hour and 8 minutes. As you jog, you will traverse ridge tops and follow a meandering canyon route, offering outstanding views of Hell Canyon and the surrounding Black Hills. Keep an eye out for the prominent limestone cliffs and other unique sedimentary rock formations that define the landscape.
Before you head out, be aware that the Hell Canyon Trailhead offers no bathroom or trash facilities, so plan accordingly and pack out everything you pack in. Cell service is generally unavailable in this area, so download your maps beforehand. Ticks are prevalent, especially during warmer months, so remember to check yourself thoroughly after your run. The trail is maintained for non-motorized use, ensuring a quieter experience for your jog.
This route provides a unique perspective on ecological recovery within the Black Hills National Forest. You will observe visible impacts and regrowth from the 2000 Jasper Fire, showcasing nature's resilience. The trail's combination of ridge-top views and canyon exploration makes it a distinctive option for experienced joggers seeking a rewarding workout in a natural setting.
