Here is something to add to your bucket list: Camp at Lower Lamarck Lake on a full moon in October. By day, the lake’s hues of teal and turquoise reflect sparks of sunlight from the surface of the water, like flakes of silver. You watch the alpine glow spread like flames across the White Mountains to the east. By night, the moon rises from behind the eastern ridgeline, and illuminates the trees and the rocks surrounding you; the stars shimmering above Mount George Davis to the west. There’s no need for a headlamp, as the moonlight highlights the aspen and the granite, casting dark shadows onto the dirt and duff beneath your Crocs. Breathe slowly- only the gentle lapping of water along the shore and the stark silence of the night can be heard. It is calm.
