The area around Wolfstein belonged in the 11th and 12th century a high-free branch of Kuenringer.
After a turbulent history and multiple ownership Wolfstein came first mortgage and 1630 by purchase to the Göttweig Abbey. Over time, however, it lost importance and the buildings soon became ruins. The current owners secured the walls and made parts of the outer bailey habitable again.
