Santa Maria de Montserrat Abbey

Santa Maria de Montserrat is an abbey of the Order of Saint Benedict located on the mountain of Montserrat in Monistrol de Montserrat, Catalonia, Spain. It is notable for enshrining the image of the Virgin of Montserrat. The monastery was founded in the 11th century and rebuilt between 19th and 20th centuries, and still functions to this day, with over 70 monks. There have always been roughly 80 monks in residence.

If you are passing through Barcelona or surroundings, the visit to Montserrat is almost mandatory. For those who go by bike, you can enjoy a beautiful climb of about 10 kms with stunning views. Once up, it is highly recommended to go up to the entrance of the monastery.

Montserrat Monastery is a must visit when in the area. If you have time, it is recommended to visit the Monastery inside.

The monastery is 720 meters high, and is a point for Christian pilgrims.
