View from Mariaberg

Mariaberg is the name of a mountain and the village located there in the St. Lorenz district of the city of Kempten (Allgäu). The town is located in the eastern part of the ridge of the same name. The highest elevation of the ridge is called Höhenegg, which, at 915 m above sea level, is also the highest elevation in the city of Kempten.The town's Chapel of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary was built in 1783 on the orders of the Kempten prince abbot Honorius Roth von Schreckenstein. Until 1768, a chapel owned by Balthasar Weegmann from Guggers am Kniebos stood on the same spot. The chapel is regularly used by the Catholic parish of St. Lorenz for church services.In the Tyrolean War of Freedom, Vorarlberg troops allied with the Tyroleans marched over the Mariaberg to Kempten several times in 1809.The smallest folk association in the Allgäu was founded in Mariaberg in 1848.
