    Hiking

This trailhead leads up to the Pillsbury Mountain summit and the French Louis Trail leading to Pillsbury Lake. It should be accessible from the forest road leading up to it, but that road is often closed, so most park near the entrance of the road and start their hike from there.

Be aware that the roads leading up to this trailhead when open are backcountry roads and may require a vehicle with 4-wheel drive.

The French Louie Trail offers a delightful journey through the Adirondack wilderness, where you'll traverse pretty swamps and picturesque pine forests. This easy hiking route, spanning 3.3 miles (5.3 km) with 483 feet (147 metres) of elevation gain, guides you past a series of stunning lakes like Pillsbury and Cedar Lakes, providing continuous scenic views. Expect a diverse experience that can be completed in about 1 hour and 29 minutes, perfect for a refreshing escape into nature.

When planning your visit, note that while the trail is generally easy, some sections can be technical due to beaver activity, leading to roots, rocks, mud, and stream crossings. Access is typically straightforward from the Pillsbury Mountain Trailhead, though a short road walk might be involved at the start. It's a great option for a day hike, but checking trail conditions, especially after rain, is always a good idea to prepare for potentially wet spots.

This trail is part of the larger French Louie Loop and is steeped in history, named after the renowned Adirondack guide and trapper Louis Seymour. You'll find remnants of past logging activities, like an old dam at Cedar Lake, adding a historical layer to your remote wilderness experience. Keep an ear out for loons and an eye open for wildlife, as this area offers a deep connection with nature away from the crowds.
