As early as 1427, Machtilshausen must have been a handsome town with its own chapel, the Chapel of HI. James the Elder is dated 1426 on the day after the Assumption of Mary. In 1502, the first stone church with choir and tower was built under Prince-Bishop Lorenz von Bibra (1495 - 1519). This was renovated in 1909, although the choir room and tower of the old church were retained. This can still be seen on the keystone of the late Gothic reticulated vault. There is a Marian grotto behind the church. Due to the winding and densely built-up location, it is difficult to get a good view of the church. From the panoramic path above you at least get a good view of the tower. The church is also a protected roost for the greater mouse-eared bat. Over the summer months, hundreds of young bat pups are raised in the church tower.
