This Buddhist carving is presumed to have been made in the early 7th century, thus making it the oldest depiction of a buddha found on Namsan Mountain in Gyeongju. The valley in which it is located is called Bulgok, meaning "Valley of the Buddha."

The buddha was carved in a niche hallowed 90 cm deep into the rock surface.

It has a round face and leans slightly forward, with large eyes, a faint smile, and a peaceful expression. Robes cover both hands thus obscuring the hand gesture, but based on the outlines, it is thought to be a gesture symbolizing being in a meditative state. The robe falls below the knees, covering the upper part of the pedestal, and the folds of the robe are decorated with wave designs.
