Gorzegno's history is well-known from the early Middle Ages, and in the following centuries it became intertwined with the Del Carretto marquises. Direct evidence of this is the presence of the ruined castle, a symbolic monument of the town, clearly visible from the road that runs alongside it and dominating this part of the valley.
The castle's initial construction phase dates back to around the 12th century, corresponding to the building's current perimeter and featuring a gate tower and a residential keep.
