On April 30, 1888, the Bavarian State Parliament passed the law for the construction and operation of a local railway connecting Königshofen with Neustadt, establishing a connection there to the main line opened in 1874 towards Schweinfurt. For this purpose, 1.047 million marks were approved.

Construction finally began in March 1892, and one year later, on October 1, 1893, the ceremonial opening of the local railway by the Bavarian State Railways followed.

Passenger train services were discontinued on May 30, 1976, and freight train services on December 30, 1994. The Federal Railway Authority approved the closure of the line on May 11, 1995, which was then implemented on August 1, 1995. The dismantling of the track systems was completed in June 1997. The Saaletal-Radweg was later built on the route.

The Bad Neustadt–Bad Königshofen railway line was a single-track branch line over 23 kilometers long in Lower Franconia, which ran from Bad Neustadt an der Saale to Bad Königshofen im Grabfeld. The railway line along the Fränkische Saale was also called the Grabfeldbahn. In 1997, the line was dismantled.
