    Historical interpretation:
The landing monument in Baarland (municipality of Borsele) commemorates the first landing of Allied soldiers to liberate Walcheren and Zuid-Beveland. This first attempt partially failed.

In order to make optimal use of the port of Antwerp, free passage of the Western Scheldt was essential for the Allies. But Zuid Beveland and Walcheren were still occupied, which meant that the occupying forces controlled all movements on the Western Scheldt. The planning staff of Cresar's First Canadian Army headquarters (Simons and Admiral Ramsay) considered Walcheren to be the biggest obstacle to opening the Scheldt. The Zeeland coast was a highly developed part of the Atlantic Wall. This served to protect the west coast of the German Empire from Allied invasions. The strength of this defensive wall made an attack from the sea almost impossible. The only connection across the country was the Sloedam, a long access road from Zuid-Beveland. Because this dam was very important, strong defenses had been erected by the occupying forces at both ends.

To force the occupying forces to surrender, the Allies decided to flood Walcheren by means of air strikes, followed by an amphibious attack. The attack took place via three lines: landing in Vlissingen (from Breskens), landing at Westkapelle (from Ostend) and an attack on the Sloedam from Zuid-Beveland. The resistance the Allies encountered on Walcheren was among the toughest they encountered during landings on the European coast.

When all of Walcheren was finally liberated on November 9, 1944, the Allies were able to take stock. Losses amounted to 27,633 men (mainly Canadians and British), while 10,000 prisoners were taken. After the great battle for Walcheren and Zuid-Beveland, the Dutch Princess Irene Brigade was moved to Zeeland on November 14, 1944. When the brigade arrived at Walcheren, they found a devastated population. Most of the island was under water and many villages were destroyed.
