In 1798 a Roman Catholic church was established in 's-Heerenhoek and in 1801 in Kwadendamme. church built. The Catholics of Ovezande were housed at 's-Heerenhoek and Kwadendamme. However, this was not to the satisfaction of the Catholics of Ovezande. More and more voices were raised for their own church.

On December 8, 1846, the first letter was sent to the Diocese of Haarlem about founding a parish in Ovezande. However, this was not responded to. But in 1857 Mgr. De Vree granted permission to found a parish church, but for the time being as a subsidiary church of Kwadendamme. Now a committee was put together, consisting of the pastor of Kwadendamme and Messrs. Adriaan Pieterse Rijk, Dignus de Jonge, Hubertus Drijdijk and Jan Marinusse Rijk. They received the necessary land for the construction of the church from Mr. Adriaan Pieterse Rijk as a gift, by deed dated March 6, 1858.

On April 23, 1858, Mr. Marinus Adriaanse Vermuë the site for the construction of a cemetery. All other Catholics contributed according to their ability. The foundation stone was laid on March 28, 1859. It is a hall church with quasi-Gothic forms and the construction cost at the time was 14,813 guilders. It was a design by Mr. Vogelpoel from Utrecht and offered space for 250 seats, so not a large church. Already on November 23, 1859, the church was inaugurated by Dean Thomas van 's-Heerenhoek and placed under the protection of the Assumption of Mary. A Holy Mass was celebrated every Sunday and on public holidays. There was also a celebration on Wednesday. Officially the parish became independent on June 28, 1873. Exactly one year later, on November 23, 1860, the cemetery was dedicated by Pastor Wesselingh “sine pompa et concursu populi”.
