Wright built the house in 1903 for William Martin, president of the Martin & Martin Stove Company in Chicago. For this house, Wright was undecided whether to emphasize horizontal or vertical lines. Therefore, both lines can be found in the impressive construction. Martin's brother Darwin Martin was so impressed by the construction that he commissioned 6 more villas from Wright.
