Nikolaus Groß was not only active in the Catholic Workers' Movement (KAB), but also—a far less well-known fact—a member of the State Association of Nativity Scene Friends in Rhineland and Westphalia. However, a study of his life, which was profoundly shaped by the Christian spirit, clearly shows us that life in following Jesus consists not only of the sweet child in the manger in Bethlehem, but also of the cross on Golgotha.

He viewed the courage to proclaim God's unconditional love for all people, even when this truth and the appeal to Christian values contradicted the prevailing National Socialist thinking in the political situation of his time. He considered this his task and calling, and he stood up for it—with all the consequences. Born on September 30, 1898, he publicly professed and lived his faith. He was sentenced to death by the People's Court on January 15, 1945, and (presumably) executed on January 23. On 7 October 2001, Pope John Paul II beatified him in Rome.
