Lock keepers provided lock duty. They usually supplied one to three locks, and in exceptional cases up to six. They had to use cranks to operate the gates (slides) for the inflow or draining of water and to open or close the heavy oak sluice gates. A lock took about 10-15 minutes. The keepers were also responsible for the supervision and maintenance of the canal and its facilities. 69 lock keeper's houses were built for them according to a variable model plan that could be adapted to the respective terrain situation. The lock keepers were able to use the surrounding land for growing vegetables and keeping animals.ludwig-donau-main-kanal.de/poi/schleuse_61_bei_roethenbach_b-27855
