Kappeln is a city in the countryside fishing in the district of Schleswig-Flensburg in Schleswig-Holstein. The city is located on the Schlei and borders since the incorporation of the village Olpenitz also to the Baltic Sea. Kappeln has always been a local trading center and fishing village. Until June 2006, it was garrison town due to the stationing of naval units in the base Olpenitz.
