Ussel Castle, located on a clear and steep promontory, looms over the town of Châtillon from the south.
Built by Ebalo di Challant towards the middle of the 14th century (data confirmed by dendrochronological analysis), Ussel Castle represents a turning point in Aosta Valley military architecture. We are in fact in the presence of the first example in the Aosta Valley of a monobloc castle, the last evolutionary phase of the medieval castle, which marks the transition between the contemporary castle of Fénis and the rigid forms of that of Verrès.
