During World War I, after the defeat at Caporetto in the autumn of 1917, the British Army came to the aid of their Italian ally in this very sector of the plateau, to prevent the Austro-Hungarians from breaking through the defense line and invading the Po Valley. A complex system of trenches, emplacements, and rock shelters was built in these woods, which are still visible today. Fighting erupted in 1918, particularly during the last and desperate Austro-Hungarian assault on June 15, 1918.
