Located on the border between England and Scotland, Gretna Green became famous as a destination for runaway couples seeking to get married. The key attraction was the Gretna Green Famous Blacksmith's Shop, which played a significant role in the history of elopements in Britain.

In the 18th century, English marriage laws required couples to be of a certain age and to have parental consent. Scotland, however, had more lenient marriage laws, allowing couples as young as 16 to marry without parental consent.

The blacksmith's shop at Gretna Green became a popular venue for these elopements. It's said that the local blacksmith, Richard Rennison, performed many of these ceremonies. The most famous part of the tradition is the "anvil marriage," where the couple would stand on an anvil in the blacksmith's shop while the ceremony was performed.

Nowadays the blacksmith's shop is part of a popular tourist attraction offering shopping, experience days and a food hall.
