Kaatje's story is an ode to the woman behind the man. Symbol for all skipper's wives who have waved goodbye to their husbands never to be seen again.
Kaatje stayed behind with her son when her Willem left home after an argument on his way to the East Indies. He was doomed never to return. Cursed to sail around the Cape of Good Hope forever... Kaatje had nothing left and had to leave her home in Havenstraat for the edge of the fortress.
