At this location you are on the former sea dike of the Roode Polder. The Bottomless Pit was created by a fierce northwesterly storm that hit the coasts of Flanders and the Netherlands during the night of January 14 to 15, 1808. As a result, untold damage was caused to the sea dikes of the time. A number of polders in Assenede flooded. The worst damage occurred in the vicinity of Philippine and Sas van Gent. The sea lock of the Sint-Pieterspolder, located on the other side of this dike near Philippine, broke through and the swirling water flowed into the Flemish polders.

The water overflowed the dike at this point and poured out of it into a deep round well. The sea wall broke through and the resulting hole could not be closed immediately. A ring dike was constructed around the Bottomless Pit. A place that makes the natural power of water in the landscape clear.
