This polder was diked in 1612. At this location you can realize how man reclaimed land from the sea in the Middle Ages.

Historical interpretation:
The Groote or Oude Sint-Albertpolder is a polder north of Sas van Gent, belonging to the Polders of Albert and Isabella, in the Dutch province of Zeeland.

In 1610, Archduke Albertus of Austria granted permission to dike the salt marshes in the Assenede district. The polder was completed in 1612 and was named after the archduke. Later the prefix Sint- was added.

It was one of the first polders to be parceled out according to a rectangular plan.

When the border between Staats-Vlaanderen and the Southern Netherlands was established in 1664, 483 hectares were located in Staats-Vlaanderen and 480 hectares in the Southern Netherlands.

In 1808, the northern part of the polder was flooded, causing the loss of 20 hectares of the Dutch part. Today that is 463 hectares.
