    North Bridge/Kaiser Bridge (1901/1904) - Mainz 🚴‍

The Kaiser Bridge (now: Nordbrücke) is a railway bridge connecting Mainz Neustadt with Mainz-Amöneburg and Mainz-Kastel over the Rhine. The river forms the border between Rhineland-Palatinate and Hesse.

The old bridge was built between 1901 and 1904 with a half-timbered arch structure and decorated with elaborate relief decoration. On May 1, 1904, this second Mainz Rhine bridge was inaugurated with military honors by Kaiser Wilhelm II, the Hessian Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig, and Chancellor Bernhard von Bülow. Julius Buckler, a pilot from Mombach who later became a flying ace in World War I, flew under the bridge, which had a clearance of approximately 9 meters. Shortly thereafter, it was given the name Kaiser Bridge. The Kaiser Bridge was blown up on March 17, 1945 (at the end of World War II) by the retreating Wehrmacht to halt advancing US troops.

The North Bridge was built on the remains of the Kaiser Bridge in 1955. The remains of the bridgehead structures were removed, and the bridge was rebuilt as a simple lattice girder structure over Petersaue Island. A walkway is attached to the outside of the bridge via an accessible staircase, allowing pedestrians and cyclists to easily cross the Rhine.

Nice way to cross the Rhine - without bothersome cars and with a nice view.
