    Olympic Flame
1964 Winter Olympics and 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck
    The Olympic Rings
Innsbruck hosted the 1964 and 1976 Olympic Games. The Olympic rings and the bowls for the Olympic flame at the Bergisel Ski Jump commemorate these events.
Traditionally, the ski jump on the Bergisel in Innsbruck has always held great significance for Tyrol. The Winter Olympics have been held here twice – the 1964 and 1976 Olympic Games. The site also holds special historical significance: about 200 years ago, Tyrolean Andreas Hofer fought here for his country's freedom. The Olympic flame was lit on the Bergisel at the 1964 and 1976 Olympic Games.

On January 29, 1964, the 9th Winter Olympics opened in the Berg Isel Stadium in Innsbruck. The last torch runner was the slalom world champion Josl Rieder. Bobsleigh athlete Paul Aste took the Olympic oath. Federal President Adolf Schärf declared the games open in front of 60,000 spectators.
The Olympic flame also burned in the Bergisel Stadium in 1976.
The memorial plaques in the area of the Olympic fire pits show all medal winners from both Olympic Games.
