On January 29, 1964, the 9th Winter Olympics opened in the Berg Isel Stadium in Innsbruck. The last torch runner was the slalom world champion Josl Rieder. Bobsleigh athlete Paul Aste took the Olympic oath. Federal President Adolf Schärf declared the games open in front of 60,000 spectators.
The Olympic flame also burned in the Bergisel Stadium in 1976.
The memorial plaques in the area of the Olympic fire pits show all medal winners from both Olympic Games.
