The picturesque village of Montorsaio stands as an authentic masterpiece of defensive architecture. With its slender shape, it represents the perfect prototype of a hilltop village, with its ancient homes arranged in concentric circles, majestically perched to protect the sumptuous cistern and the majestic Sienese keep. The latter, although in ruins, continues to narrate its epic importance over the centuries.
The implacable fortito forest, so called in the suggestive Maremma, climbs tenaciously until it touches the town. In this setting, delicious mushrooms, succulent chestnuts and abundant game mingle with breathtaking views, offering an authentic and enchanting experience of the Maremma, worthy of a postcard.
Montorsaio, an ancient fiefdom of the Salimbeni and previous noble families, has acted as an outpost for the Sienese republic over the centuries. His legacy is evident in the refined copy of the Madonna and Child by Sano di Pietro, kept in the church of Santi Cerbone e Michele, as well as in the wooden sculpture of the Virgin attributed to the school of Mariano d'Agnolo Romanelli, located in the oratory of the Crucifix.
The ruins of the Nave convent are mysterious and fascinating, where legends of licentious friars and dark events create an extraordinarily singular atmosphere, adding a touch of enigma to this gem of the Maremma.
