The Monticello Mill Memorial and Wildlife Park was built on the Monticello Mill Tailings (USDOE) site. This location was home to a vanadium mill that operated from 1942 to 1960, producing uranium and vanadium for the U.S. nuclear weapons program. This mill was the only uranium processing mill owned by the federal government and when it operated, the mill generated thousands of cubic yards of ore tailings containing trace amounts of uranium. Unfortunately, milling activities and waste disposal practices led to soil, surface water, and groundwater contamination with heavy metals and radioactive constituents. Cleanup efforts have been undertaken to mitigate these environmental impacts, but ongoing operation and maintenance activities are still necessary. Today, there is a park with informational signs, picnic and grilling areas, and trails. This is a great hike close to town for anyone interested in United States nuclear history.
