"Hagg" (sometimes "Hag") seems to be an Old Norse word for "a place where trees were felled", or a clearing, suggesting an old practice of coppicing.

This short walk above the village of Oswaldkirk is a lovely one. There is an established path here, running partly via the wood and then on the edge of it. A peaceful forest, very green and much of it left to grow wild, just the way you like it!
