Imposing and majestic castle on the bank of the Panaro, the fortress of Vignola was probably built well before the 10th century and until the 15th century its function was exclusively military. Today, however, the structure can be visited and, among other things, contains the precious cycle of late Gothic frescoes commissioned by Uguccione Contrari to - it is thought - Maestro di Vignola, a leading figure in Emilian art of the first decades of the 15th century, of which currently the name is not known.
