In the centuries before and after Christ, not only the area of present-day Italy, but a vast territory extending far beyond it (including the Mediterranean coast of North Africa, the Iberian Peninsula, Gaul and Germania, as well as parts of the British Isles) was dominated by the Roman Empire. It was ruled by emperors (imperators), one of the most famous to this day being Julius Caesar, to whom this monument in Cividale del Friuli is dedicated.
