The Fischbeck Monastery on the Weser near Hessisch Oldendorf was founded by the noblewoman Helmburg in 955. She built what was then the Canonesses' Monastery in honor of her late husband and in memory of her sons, who also died. Through the centuries, the women's monastery was under special imperial protection, first documented by Otto I. It survived difficult times, wars and economic hardships. During the Reformation, the first Evangelical Lutheran service was celebrated in 1559. Since its founding over a thousand years ago, women have consistently lived and maintained the monastery.

The canonesses offer pilgrims very hospitable, excellent accommodations in their monastery's pilgrim apartment. Highly recommended!
