What is a barrel?
In the Dictionary of Zeeland Dialects (1964), a vate (called vaete in dialect) is defined as: “public well, near or in the village, serving as a drinking well for livestock and as a burn pit”. A vate usually has a wide, gentle slope on one side that is paved (paved). In addition to serving as a burn pit and watering place for livestock, the barrels also served as a drinking water supply in times when no water mains had yet been installed.

Why near the church?
Barrels were found everywhere on the islands of Zeeland, both in the cities and in the villages. Many barrels have disappeared, but relatively many have been preserved in villages in Zuid Beveland. It is unclear why so many remain here.

A vate was usually located centrally in the village. This way all villagers could easily reach him. Most likely the barrel was available to everyone. The vate was often located near the church, which was also a central point in the village.
