The square, where markets were held until the first half of the 20th century, was created when the three historical settlement centers (Obervorstadt, Bischofsstadt and Untervorstadt) grew together over time. The oldest mention by name dates back to around 1600. Over time, various inns established themselves on the Holzmarkt and lasted for several centuries.
The Bruchsal gallows was located at the Holzmarkt until 1745. To ensure that no new gallows were built there, the Einhort landlord donated a bridge cross in its place. This cross was moved to the “Great Bridge” in 1772 and to the cemetery in 1886.
