The Lower Town Tower was built in its current form at the beginning of the 14th century on the orders of Emperor Frederick III, who at that time had all the fortifications expanded because of the impending danger from the east.
The two coat of arms towers also bear witness to the rule of Emperor Maximilian I and, after the restoration in 1957, show coat of arms frescoes of the Habsburg Empire and Burgundy by Jörg Kölderer, dated 1502.

The Lower City Tower is open for viewing and can be climbed up to the viewing platform. Display boards provide information about the history of the city tower, Emperor Maximilian and the Peasants' War. A model shows a historical view of the city of Vöcklabruck.
