The area of Vicenza is rich in water that flows from the springs of the Pre-Alps into the flat springs and, through the historic center of Vicenza, then flows towards the sea. The Pusterla Bridge takes its name from the old medieval gate that originally also had a small watchtower, a portcullis and a drawbridge, located between the southern bank of the Bacchiglione River and the beginning of Contrà Porti. Pusterla means small door and refers to its secondary dimensions compared to the doors of San Pietro and San Felice, which have also been lost. Initially made of wood and later of stone, restored several times, it was enlarged in 1928 due to the increased traffic needs and to create sidewalks. Between 2011 and 2012, Ponte Pusterla was repaired and consolidated after being damaged by the flood of November 1, 2010.
