A Romanesque church was built here around 1200, but a century earlier there was already mention of a first church in Oostnieuwkerke.

The church was initially dedicated to Saint Blaise, later (after thorough repairs of damage caused by religious disputes) to Saint Brigida and only from 1801 to Our Lady.

Nothing remains of those old churches at the moment. The current church dates from 1897.

An information board at the church reminds that the building was used as a German field hospital during the First World War. Upon liberation, the interior was left in a seriously damaged condition. During the liberation, an English shell hit also severely damaged the roof and spire (which were repaired in 1919).

The references to Saint Brigida, the former patron saint, are still numerous today: the church has a Brigida altar (1928) and a Brigida chapel (circa 1974) and the park in front of the church is also called Saint Brigida Park.

In 1897 the church was replaced by a brick neo-Gothic hall church designed by Jules Soete. The three-aisled hall church was given an octagonal crossing tower on a square base, in keeping with the regional architectural tradition.

At the back of the church you will see the old mechanism of the tower clock.

A 'local' told me that I was "wish I could have taken pictures of the church", because it will disappear behind scaffolding for a long time this year (October?)
